Sign the petition to reform New Zealand's broken electricity market.
Kiwis are being stung by high power bills, no thanks to New Zealand's unfair electricity market. If things continue the way they are, we're all set to see power prices increase further, putting financial pressure on families and pushing more households into energy hardship. The rising costs are also putting New Zealand's climate goals for a greener, more sustainable future at risk.
17% of Kiwi households are currently living in energy hardship.
Kiwis deserve better. That's why we're demanding reform from the Government to fix the broken market. But we can't do it without you.
Join the Revolt to bring high power prices down.
Together we can fight for power affordability for all Kiwis.
What we need the Government to fix.
The wholesale electricity market in New Zealand is not a level playing field. For far too long, the market has enabled dominance by a few Gentailers (companies that both generate and sell power), who use their market power to sell electricity to independent retailers at a higher price than they do to their own retail arms. Ultimately, driving out competition and denying Kiwis access to fair pricing and their freedom to choose.
The fix is simple.
We're calling for the Government to separate the Gentailers so that these companies either generate electricity or retail electricity, but not both. Or, at a minimum, bring equality to the marketplace by making all retailers buy power off the same market.
They could be passing the savings on to everyday Kiwis.
The Gentailers buy their own power for less but still charge similar, or sometimes higher, retail prices to their customers instead of passing on the savings.
New Zealanders can’t afford to keep this up.
The high price of electricity costs us lives and livelihoods:
- Over 100,000 Kiwis living in energy hardship can’t afford to heat their homes.
- Businesses already under pressure are closing their doors due to high electricity prices.
The high costs also make it unaffordable for businesses currently reliant on fossil fuels to switch to greener electricity options.
